40FT EARTH TERMINAL
Three satellite communication ground stations were designed and
manufactured by the Marconi Company for the Ministry of Aviation.
The first was erected at
SRDE for receiving and sending military communications under the Anglo/American Initial
Defence Communication Satellite Project, 1966. The 40ft diameter dish aerial was mounted in a 60ft high nylon radome, together with the transmitter and part of the control and
communications equipment. The remainder of the equipment was housed in a number
of transportable containers, and the complete station was able to be transported by air in
the form of major sub-units.
