The engineering division provided two essential services on which the rest of the establishment depended:
- Research and development of power units
- Research and development in general engineering fields - including the mechanical engineering of installing wireless equipment in vehicles and packaging and the supression of electrical interference.
This division provided all the necessary engineering services required
by the research worker and equipment designer. There was a Main
Workshop equipped with modern machine tools and Specialised
Workshops. The workshops were staffed by highly skilled technical personnel
capable of producing novel engineering techniques to
satisfy the mechanical requirements of scientific teams. It also had a Drawing Office, and an Illustrators
section. The Engineering Services also had its own Research and Development programmes on power units and on other general engineering fields, which
included mechanical engineering, the installation of equipments in vehicles, also packaging and the suppression of electrical
interference and radiation. It also controlled Publications
and Photographic sections and an Environmental Engineering section.
An important part of the engineering division was the Apprentice
Training Facility, which had a training shop for apprentices.
